Japan Grants Conditional Approval for iPSC-Derived Regenerative Medicine Products
In March 2026, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) granted conditional marketing authorization to two regenerative medicine products derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).
The decision represents a significant milestone for the regenerative medicine sector, as these therapies could become the first iPSC-based treatments to receive regulatory approval globally.
Since induced pluripotent stem cells were first reported in 2006, researchers worldwide have worked toward translating this scientific breakthrough into clinical therapies. Nearly two decades later, these efforts are now moving closer to real-world medical application.
Approved Regenerative Medicine Products
Two therapies received conditional approval.
- ReHeart (Cuorips)
An iPSC-derived cardiomyocyte sheet therapy for severe heart failure. - Amchepry (Sumitomo Pharma / Racthera)
An iPSC-derived dopaminergic neural progenitor cell therapy for Parkinson’s disease.
Both therapies were reviewed under Japan’s conditional approval framework for regenerative medicine products, which allows earlier patient access while additional post-market data are collected to further confirm safety and efficacy.
Following market introduction, further clinical data will continue to be gathered to support ongoing regulatory evaluation.
