UCB to Acquire Neurona Therapeutics to Expand Regenerative Medicine in Epilepsy
UCB has announced an agreement to acquire U.S.-based Neurona Therapeutics for up to $1.15 billion, extending its long-established epilepsy franchise into regenerative medicine and advanced therapies.
Neurona’s lead asset, NRTX-1001, is a neuronal cell therapy being developed in Phase I/II trials for drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. Designed as a single-dose approach aimed at restoring neural circuitry, it represents a notable shift beyond symptomatic control toward disease-modifying potential.
Deal highlights
- Total deal value of up to $1.15 billion
- $650 million upfront plus up to $500 million in milestones
- NRTX-1001 is a neuronal cell therapy for drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy
- Currently in Phase I/II development
- Has received FDA RMAT and EMA PRIME designations
The transaction is also notable in showing how cell therapy is extending beyond oncology into neurology and other high-unmet-need disease areas. For large biopharma, this is increasingly about more than portfolio expansion – it reflects a willingness to bring regenerative science into established therapeutic franchises where durable benefit could materially change treatment paradigms.
We extend our congratulations to the teams at UCB and Neurona Therapeutics.
As a specialised talent solutions partner in CGT and regenerative medicine, Greenstaff Life Sciences will continue to follow developments in the expanding application of cell therapy.
