Major Consolidation in the Rare Disease Space: BioMarin to Acquire Amicus Therapeutics for Approximately $4.8 Billion

BioMarin Pharmaceutical has announced that it will acquire Amicus Therapeutics, a company with strong expertise in rare diseases, in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $4.8 billion.
Through this acquisition, BioMarin will add approved therapies for Fabry disease and Pompe disease, significantly expanding its portfolio in the rare disease space.

The transaction has attracted attention as a strategic move to strengthen BioMarin’s portfolio by combining approved assets with long-term growth potential.

Transaction Overview and Strategic Context

The acquisition will be executed as an all-cash transaction, with an offer price of $14.50 per share, representing a premium to Amicus’ recent closing share price.
Completion of the transaction is expected in the second quarter of 2026, subject to shareholder approval and customary regulatory clearances.

As part of the transaction, BioMarin will acquire the following approved commercial products:

  • Galafold, a treatment for Fabry disease

  • Pombiliti + Opfolda, a combination therapy for Pompe disease

These products are reported to have generated approximately $600 million in combined revenue over the trailing twelve months.
In addition, the acquisition includes DMX-200, a late-stage pipeline asset targeting focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), which will be incorporated into BioMarin’s R&D portfolio.

Implications for the Rare Disease Business

This transaction underscores the continued importance of M&A strategies in the rare disease sector that prioritize approved products, long-term exclusivity, and predictable cash flows as drivers of sustainable growth.
